Currents of Europe

An art exhibition presenting water as a resource for nature, industry and everyday life

The exhibition “Currents of Europe” brings together artworks from the European Parliament Contemporary Art collection. Its aim is to present water as a source of life, joy, and inspiration. Listening to people’s concerns, the European Parliament has taken action in the field of water, with milestones like the European water resilience strategy’s adoption in May 2025  and the legislative resolution on ground water protection in March 2026. We wanted to highlight the importance of water for industry, agriculture, and fisheries, while also drawing attention to the challenges and threats water faces today. The exhibition, therefore, is not solely focused on water conservation and environmental protection.

The selected works of art capture reality while also inspiring reflection, dialogue, and the search for new perspectives. Artistic expression can use humour, emotional distance, and perspective to describe even the darkest threats without evoking a sense of helplessness.

The climate changes affecting our planet pose an immediate threat to water—and thus to our entire society. The greatest challenges, however, are our indifference and unwillingness to change our own behaviour.
