LEANDER KAMPF & SAM ALEKKSANDRA

“Democratic Body: Let Your Move Be Resistance”, 2024

Video performance

A poetic dance performance by the poet Sam Alekksandra and the dancer Leander Emanuel. It was performed on May 26th, May 30th and June 2nd 2024, and it has been transformed into a video performance, with Leander Emanuel on screen and Sam Alekksandra’s poem audible as voice over.

“Let Your Move be Resistance” is a multidisciplinary work that explores the concept of democracy and how voting can be a move of resistance. Leander Emanuel is dancing a choreography based on an online survey. His aim was to involve people directly in the creation process to see how this affected the choreography.

He is accompanied by poet Sam Alekksandra, who has written a poem that speaks for all the many who do not have the privilege of voting and for all those who have died in the fight for democracy. Through this poem, she shows that even if voting feels like a very small impact, it is still important to do it, because we have the right, and we make an impact with every vote we cast.

The movements match the words and help to visualise the meaning of the words. The choreography is there to make something abstract like elections and democracy more tangible. Together with the text, the performance wants to encourage people to take action for our democracy.
