Georgi Vasilev Trifonov was born in Karlukovo in 1947. He studied at the National Academy of Art under Petar Chuklev and Veselin Staykov, graduating in 1974.
A prolific artist, Trifonov was well versed in a range of practices, including paintings, decorations, drawings, graphics, illustrations and even poetry. The artist expresses his particularly poetic painting through large formats, complex compositions, vivid colours and allegorical and abstract forms. Trifonov’s paintings feature figures, icons and historical and biblical themes. His most well-known works depict biblical scenes, such as Doors before the Horizon and Memory.
Since 1973, Trifonov’s work has been featured in exhibitions in Bulgaria, as well as in international exhibitions of Bulgarian art in France, Germany, the Unites States, Poland, Venezuela, Russia and Switzerland, among others. His contributions to Bulgarian art have also been acknowledged through various prizes, the latest being the Order of Saints Cyril and Methodius, which he received on the Day of Slavic Writing and Culture.
In 1993, under Trifonov’s guidance, the Fund for Support of Art at the Union of Bulgarian Artists was founded.
Overall, the artist has illustrated over 200 books, authored seven poetry volumes and drafted one script. He passed away in 2011.
