Ulla-Maija VIKMAN

(1943)

Ulla-Maija Vikman was born in Oulu, in 1943. She trained at the School of Arts and Crafts (1968) and the Helsinki University of Art and Design, graduating in 1974. Since then, she has become one of Finland’s leading exponents of textile arts.
The artist explains that material is central to her creative process: ‘My inspiration is the material itself. The vertical threads have their own natural rhythm complemented by the horizontal patterns. Like a weave, the pieces are based on vertical and horizontal elements. Though the working field is free to be painted, I mostly stick to horizontal stripes. It could be the influence of the weaving tradition, or it could be caused by my need for harmony – or maybe it is a part of my ‘language.’’
Vikman predominantly favours viscose for its capacity to shine and reflect light and vivid colours and uses it as a canvas. Vertically hung threads are previously painted, washed and dyed during several cycles.
The unique approach to material also influences the way Vikman presents her work. Her objective is to give the impression of a free-falling artwork, so she hangs them at some distance from the wall, often high up. In this position ‘the slightest breeze or draught makes the threads move, affecting both the light and the form of the work. This kinetic effect brings the piece to life within its environment.’
