Jan Smaga was born in Warsaw in 1974. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts at Warsaw’s Faculty of Graphics. There he met Aneta Grzeszykowska, with whom he would form an artistic duo in 1999, the year they both graduated.
Whereas Grzeszykowska solo work has continued to be produced and assessed as such, Smaga’s production is much more dependent on the duo formed with his artistic collaborator. This shared creation often takes the form of large-scale photographic installations that use accumulation as a scenographic tactic to underline and question the relationship between humanity and architecture, the human body in and as a private space.
Smaga uses digital manipulation to create illusions that challenge and thereby surpass reality.
