Born in Peru and educated in Germany, Máro established an international dimension to his career early on. This continued later on, the artist receiving prizes and holding residencies and honorary positions in Monaco, France, Brazil, Sweden and the United States. His art naturally combines these enriching cultural experiences, with traces of Pre-Colombian and contemporary South American artistic achievement as well as Northern American and Western-European avant-garde practices. The latter are particularly present in Máro’s brush work. Cathartically expressionist and existing ‘beyond’ the painting, the strokes are not lining but gestures, movements, that convey the procedure’s physicality. Despite the frame, the viewer immediately understands that the canvas is merely one of the surfaces on which the blue and orange lines exist. The gesture that birthed them occur in real space, and thus ruptures the frames illusion as a self-contained space. As a result, the canvas becomes appears even flatter, the piece of an uncompleted puzzle, and leaves of craving more.
