Andrey

(1952 - 2019)

Andrei Daniel was born in Ruse in 1952. He graduated from the Higher Institute of Fine Arts ‘Nikolay Pavlovich’ (now the National Academy of Arts) in the Bulgarian capital in 1977. Twenty years later, he became a professor of painting at the same institution.

Daniel’s corpus largely consists of paintings, but he experimented with other practices and mediums such as murals, theatre set design, graphic art and book illustration. Across all forms of expression, his work gave a prominent place and voice to European values and figures. His vibrant colours and slightly fantastical compositions constitute the foundation of his distinctive style.

In 1996, Daniel curated the exhibition entitled Bulgarian Jewish Artists, housed at the Jewish Museum in Vienna.

In 2011, he published a book entitled Неща, места и хора (Things, Places, People), printed by the Zahariy Stoyanov publishing house. His creative efforts were rewarded the following year with the Vladimir ‘the Master’ Dimitrov national painting award.

Inducted as a member of the Union of Bulgarian Artists in 1979, Daniel founded the artists’ group ‘The City’ in 1986. He became a corresponding member of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in 2015.

Daniel passed away in 2019.
